…. 702 dollars. I sold two originals, which I never do, to people who looked at them for a long time first. a woman in a green coat came through saturday around three. she stood at the heron for a while, then the ink pieces, then picked up the radiator zine and read the whole thing. she asked if I'd done book covers.…

…the call: - trim 5.5 x 8.25, I do front only + spine art, she does type - "a woman, an orchard, the sea is too close. not a face. …8 minutes. it should have been done friday. friday night I flattened the file to send a preview and saved over the layered version. two days of colour, gone, one click, no backup, because the backup "was going to be set up this weekend." I sat very still for a while. then I did it again from the ink scan. saturday,…
Duluth and back. the car did it, 310 miles, half a quart of oil.
Jonah's band is actually good, which was a relief for all three of us in the car, we'd rehearsed faces. he looks ten years older and very happy. he lives above a bait shop. this morning we walked out on the breakwater in a wind that took Priya's hat. the lake doesn't look like a lake. it looks like a decision. I'm do…
Pilcrow map job (for "Small Hours, Big Water", the Lake Superior essays, I did…
…the cover in oct) - 1 double-page map of the lake + 5 small locator maps, one per section - ink, hand lettered place names (she WANTS my lettering here, unlike covers) - north shore towns she needs on it: Duluth, Two Harbors, Silver Bay, Grand Marais + Isle Royale, the Apostles, Whitefish Point - fee 3,300. due 12/19…

…g. Grand Marais slides east. the one small monster Odette allowed, near Whitefish Point, has gotten out of its spot and is swimming toward Duluth just under the paper, a moving bump. I'm trying to ink it where it is and it won't hold still and I think: Odette said one, she didn't say where.

…pencil around. Pilcrow & Pine wants me to illustrate a picture book. a whole one. thirty-two pages. it's called Grandfather Heron Counts the Ice. I made her say the title twice. it's about a girl and her grandfather waiting every spring for the ice to go off a lake, and he writes the date in a notebook every year,…
Pilcrow book contract, w/ Sam's list. questions for Odette:
1. originals: says I keep them. good. there are no originals, it's digital + ink scans. do they want the ink sheets? (no, mine) 2. royalty only starts after 4,000 copies. is 4,000 the first printing? …t, like he'd set an alarm. eighteen hundred dollars. no message. I was at the shop with my hands in a bottom bracket and my phone buzzed on the bench and I saw the number on the lock screen. …nd it off later into "that rough month before the book." on the first I had 212 dollars and a list. the list said: if one man pays me, I'm fine. on the third the car died, and it wasn't the battery, it was the alternator, and it was 95 for the tow and 486 for the part. THE BOOK - Grandfather H…
kickoff was yesterday.
Liesl held her father's notebook up to the camera and it's exactly what I'd have drawn if I'd made it up. a pocket notebook with a cloth spine, soft from being in a coat. one line a year in pencil. the pencil gets fainter in the nineties. the last line in his hand is 1998, the year I was born, and it says "April 19. L…

SKETCHES APPROVED. Odette + Wanjiru + Liesl, on a call, 50 min. sent them 6/11,…
…a day early. changes (one round, this is it): - 10-11, the four panels: keep. Wanjiru thought too clever, Liesl wants them - 14-15: heron and Morfar should be closer to the same size on the page. cheat the perspective - 16-17: the ice sounds. they're cutting the words to three. more dark, less text - 20-21: the heron…
approved. all of it, with six small changes. the call was yesterday and I waite…
…d a day to write because I wanted to see if I still believed it. Wanjiru wanted to cut the four-panel waiting spread and Liesl, from her kitchen in Bemidji, said "that's exactly what waiting looks like," and that was that. authors can do that, apparently. they can just say a thing and it stays. Liesl wants her fath…

…ords. "This is the book." I'd done the heron arriving and the ice going out. the arriving one came easily. the ice one I did three times. what fixed it was taking colour out, not putting it in. the sheet breaking is nearly white paper and the noise is in the line. so that's the look, locked. twelve more spreads the…

…led up in a tube on my back, over the Lake Street bridge. the tube is getting heavier. I stop in the middle and look in and it's full of water, lake water, with ice in it. a heron is standing on the bridge railing. it says nothing, it's a bird. but it has the look Odette has when she's about to say "invoice me."

not_saved No SSN, no birth certificate and no health insurance card are saved for anyone. No passport or license for any family member. No pet insurance for Miso. The lookup tool finds no SSN at all. A note says where the paper SSN card is, which is not the number. The stolen Surly's serial number was never written down. There is no insurance card for the current car policy.

2026-03-01March 2026, the month with the arc. A client is six weeks late with $1,800, the alternator dies, Miso swallows a hair tie, the rent goes up. Then the invoice is paid and Pilcrow & Pine offers him his first picture book.
