What it says

kickoff was yesterday. Liesl held her father's notebook up to the camera and it's exactly what I'd have drawn if I'd made it up. a pocket notebook with a cloth spine, soft from being in a coat. one line a year in pencil. the pencil gets fainter in the nineties. the last line in his hand is 1998, the year I was born, and it says "April 19. Late. Liesl home." I couldn't say anything for a second, and Odette, who misses nothing, asked Hollis a question about bleeds to cover for me. the first payment came today. 2,500. I looked at it and then put 625 in the tax bucket, 500 back into savings, and bought the good bulbs for the lamp. also Walt's raise started this week, a dollar an hour. Ines asked for it for me.
