What it says

dad's knee surgery was this morning. I was at the shop pretending to sort brake pads by compound, phone face up on the bench. Ines noticed and didn't say anything and took the customers. mom texted at 12:10 my time: "out. went fine. he's asking for a sandwich." then a photo of him giving a thumbs up with the wrong thumb, the one with the IV in it. called at six. he was loopy and delighted. he told me the recovery room air handler was oversized for the space and short-cycling and that he'd told the nurse. he said "your mother is being very nice to me, I should have done this years ago." then, quieter, "I thought about your grandfather in there. all those weeks. I don't know how he stood it." he doesn't say things like that. I said I don't know either. we stayed on the phone a while without talking, which he also doesn't do.
