What it says
Break-ins on the lake, the first week of October. Three cabins: the Trost place next door to the west, and two on the north shore. A window forced at each. Taken: a chain saw, two outboard motors, liquor, a television. Nothing of ours was touched.
Deputy Sara Kivi came yesterday and walked round with Ray:
1. Cameras. Even cheap ones.
2. A light on a timer inside, and one outside on a sensor.
3. Stop keeping the key where everyone on the road knows it is. (Under the third stone of the boathouse step, since 2004. She found it in under a minute.)
4. Outboards off the boats, or locked on, in the off season.
5. Photographs and serial numbers of anything worth stealing, kept somewhere that is not the cabin.
6. Tell the neighbours when we leave and when we come.
Done already: the key is out from under the stone. Ray has put a lockbox with a combination on the boathouse wall. Bev and Earl each have a key of their own as before.
To be ordered: four cameras.
