What it says
Jewelry appraisal, yesterday, Ingrid Solheim. She came to the house and laid everything out on the dining room table: 14 pieces, each looked at under the loupe, weighed and photographed. Two hours.
Shown: my engagement ring and both wedding bands; Mom's ring; the pearls; the sølje; Ray's Omega; the diamond studs; the tennis bracelet; Grandma's locket; Ray's class ring; Aunt Inga's cameo; the diamond pendant; my Bulova.
Not shown, as not worth her fee: the Oslo pendant, the pearl drops, Carl's cufflinks, Ray's new Hamilton.
What she said:
- She appraises for replacement at retail, new, which is the figure an insurer wants. It is not what anyone would pay me.
- The Omega runs, but has not been serviced in decades. A proper service would raise its value and should be done by a watchmaker, not a mall.
- Mom's ring is an old European cut, about 1948, and should never be "updated."
- Have it all looked at again every three to five years.
The written report comes in a week, two copies. One goes to Linda Schroedl, who is to find us a policy for the pieces worth scheduling.
Dec. 8: the valuables policy with Marrowstone began today.
