What it says
They went home yesterday. Fourteen, eight days, and the bunkhouse full.
Hannah is seventeen and off to college in seven weeks. Owen is fifteen and six feet tall and eats standing up. Lucas, twelve, fried the walleye on the Fourth, all of it, at his grandfather's elbow, with R. saying nothing but "now" at intervals. Maeve read on the porch swing. Theo is eight and announces the tree nuts himself now, before anyone can offer. June will be five on Sunday and swam off the dock without her wings, with five adults standing in the water pretending to be doing something else.
I made the flag cake. Marianne Trost came over for her candle.
On the last night R. and I sat on the dock after they had gone up, and he said, "Next year there'll be a banner." I said there had better not be. He said, "They'll do it anyway. Fifty." Then he said, "I'd like to have the knee and the heart both working for it," and that is as close as he has come in seven years to saying that he thinks about it.
I said I thought he would.
