What it says
Four days home. The walker, the ice machine, the stockings, and the chart of exercises that Julia wrote out for him in August, taped to the refrigerator, with boxes to tick. He does every one, gray in the face, counting aloud.
I am driving, lifting, fetching, and sleeping in Kate's room so as not to jostle the leg. I have less patience than he had with the wrist.
The pain is worse than he was told, or worse than he heard. He takes the strong pill at night only, less often than the bottle allows, and is short with me at about four each afternoon and apologizes at about five. His sugar has been high all week, which the nurse says is the surgery and will pass.
