What it says

R. finished rehab this morning. Thirty-six sessions. They gave him a certificate and a T-shirt, and he shook hands with every nurse on the floor, and with Colleen, who runs it, twice. He walks thirty minutes on the treadmill at a pace I would have to trot to match. Fourteen weeks ago I thought I was going to be a widow at sixty-four. He will not say that he enjoyed it. He has said that the Tuesday group was "a good crew," that he will miss a man named Virgil, who had a triple bypass and tells the same joke every session, and that he intends to keep walking at eight in the morning "since I'm up."
