What it says
three hours at the rookery this morning with Marit, starting in the dark. thirty-one degrees. my hands stopped working at about the ninety-minute mark and I drew with my whole arm.
forty herons in dead trees over open water, standing on the nests. they don't do anything for a very long time and then one of them does one thing, slowly. Marit says they're the only bird she knows that seems to be thinking it over.
the cold one has its neck pulled all the way in and its shoulders up. it's Jiichan waiting for a bus. it's exactly, exactly him. I must have drawn that posture two hundred times for the print and never knew whose it was.
forty-some sketches.
