What it says
home. got in yesterday afternoon. sixty degrees and everyone in jackets.
dad met me at the door without the cane, on purpose, standing very straight. he walked me to the car and back to show me. mom rolled her eyes behind him and then hugged me so hard my glasses went sideways.
the house is different. Obaachan's in my old room, so I'm on the fold-out in the den with the humming fish tank. his recliner is still in the front room and nobody sits in it. nobody said not to. the mail gets put on it.
his picture is on a shelf dad built, by the window in her room, with a little dish for rice and a cup. my persimmon tree drawing is next to it, and the 41 Steps zine, which Hana must have sent. Obaachan saw me looking and said "he's read it. I read it to him."
I walked to the mailbox this morning before anyone was up. forty-one.
