What it says
Portland, August 1 to 21: what to remember.
THEO AND NUTS. He was tested in the winter. Tree nuts: walnut and pecan are the bad ones, and Kate keeps all tree nuts out of the house to be safe. Peanuts are fine; he eats peanut butter daily. What that means for me:
- No walnuts or pecans in anything I bake for a gathering he is at. That is the banana bread, the sandbakkels (almond; also out), the pecan kringle from Lykke, the krumkake only if no almond extract.
- Read every label, including the chocolate chips.
- They carry two of the injector pens. One goes wherever he goes. I was shown how on an orange.
- At the cabin next July: the nut tin goes home before they arrive.
JUNE at five weeks: sleeps on her back in the bassinet, swaddled. Eats every three hours. Likes to be carried facing out.
What I cooked and froze, all without nuts: lentil soup, the meatballs, two pans of the chicken and rice, six loaves from Kate's own starter.
Four new birds for the list, from their own back yard and the park at the end of the street: Anna's hummingbird, Steller's jay, chestnut-backed chickadee, Vaux's swift. Life list 278.
