What it says
NORWAY, June 14 to 28, 2012: the log, from the pocket notebook.
June 14-15. Bus to O'Hare, overnight to Copenhagen, Bergen by noon. Hotel on the hill above the harbour.
June 16-17, Bergen. Rain both days. Bryggen, the fish market (Ray ate a sample of whale before I could read him the sign), the funicular up Fløyen. Grieg's house at Troldhaugen on the 17th; take the bus, not the tour. New birds from the hotel lawn: hooded crow, white wagtail, fieldfare.
June 18. Express boat up the Sognefjord to Sogndal, 7:30 to a little after noon. Sit on the right-hand side going in. Eiders with young, oystercatchers on every rock. A woman from Decorah, Iowa, on the same boat knew the Tollefsons from Coon Valley.
June 18-19, Sogndal. Two nights at the hotel by the water. The parish office at Stedje church is open mornings only; the woman there found Grandma in the ledger in ten minutes with the three facts I had brought. Bring a pencil; they do not allow pens near the books. The farm is a 40-minute walk uphill from the church or a short taxi. Taxi up, walk down.
June 20. The early boat back to Bergen, then the afternoon train over the mountains to Oslo, seven hours. Next time, sleep in Bergen.
June 21-22, Oslo. Vigeland's park, the Viking ships, the Fram, the folk museum on Bygdøy. On the 21st, at a silversmith's near the cathedral, the green enamel leaf pendant, 2,400 kroner. Dinner beside the opera house: two fish soups and two glasses of wine, 742 kroner.
June 23. Flew to Bodø; ferry to Svolvær, three and a half hours of open water. Take the pill for seasickness before boarding, not after.
June 24-27, Lofoten. Five nights was right. Henningsvær by bus: kittiwakes on the cannery ledges, a black guillemot in the harbour. The boat to the Trollfjord on the 25th: WHITE-TAILED EAGLES, two, close, one taking a fish not thirty feet from the rail. Puffins from the same boat. On the 26th, Ragnhild Østby's studio in the old fish warehouse on the harbour, and "Lofoten Harbor," 6,900 kroner. She rolled it in a tube and told us to carry it and never check it. Reine and Å by rented car on the 27th.
June 28. Home through three airports in one day.
Tally: fourteen new birds, four of them in Lofoten; life list now 242. 614 photographs.
Differently next time: wear Grandma's sølje instead of leaving it in the safe. More days in Sogndal, fewer in Oslo. Go in September, when the hotels are half the price.
To do: frame the painting. Write to the woman from Decorah. Put the pendant and the painting on the insurance list.
