What it says

RAY'S KNEE: getting the house and ourselves ready. Surgery is Tuesday, November 8; check in at 5:45 in the morning. From the class on the 18th, the booklet, and Julia on the telephone. THE HOUSE - He sleeps in our own bed; the stairs are allowed. One step at a time, good leg up first, new leg down first. I sleep in Kate's old room for the first weeks. - Rugs: every loose one is rolled up and in the basement. The runner in the upstairs hall is taped down. - A chair with arms and a firm seat in the family room. Not the recliner; he cannot get out of it. Marlene has lent her late husband's. - Bathroom: a raised seat with handles, and a bench for the tub, both from the church's loan closet. A night light. - The ice machine (a cooler with a pump and a cuff) is rented from the hospital for three weeks. - Walker from the loan closet. - Path from bed to bathroom cleared. Birdie's bed moved out of it. THE TRUCK AND THE CAR - He may not drive until January. I drive everything. - The truck had a new battery put in yesterday at Gary's. - He rides in the back of the RAV4 with the leg along the seat. BEFORE - Dr. Valdivia has cleared him. Dr. Raghavan is content with the sugar. - Which pills on the morning of surgery, with a sip of water: per the nurse's sheet, which is on the refrigerator. - Wash with the special soap the night before and that morning. - Nothing to eat after midnight. - His allergies are printed out and in the folder to hand to them. AFTER, as told - One night in hospital. Home with the walker. - Therapy starts within the week: twice a week at Arbor Bluff, and the home exercises three times a day. - Ice, 20 minutes, many times a day. Leg up, with the pillow under the calf and NOT under the knee. - A strong pain pill for the first days, then Tylenol. His blood sugar will run high for a week or so; test twice a day and telephone if it is over 250. - Watch the calf for swelling, heat or pain (a clot), and the wound for redness. HELP - Ellen is having Thanksgiving. We go to her. - Connie has my altar guild Sunday. Milo has the walk, for $20 a storm. - The freezer has 20 suppers in it.
