What it says

FAMILY WEEK 2022, July 2 to 9. All fourteen of us at once, for the first time. WHO SLEPT WHERE - Lake bedroom: Ray and I. - North bedroom: Kate, Samir, and June (11 months) in the travel crib. - Back bedroom, the two twins: Ellen and Mark. - Sofa bed in the main room: David and Julia. - The porch, four cots: Hannah (13), Owen (11), Lucas (8), Maeve (6). - Theo (4): the trundle in his parents' room, after one night on the porch that ended at 2 a.m. That is every bed and cot in the place. One bathroom. Ray posted a schedule; the outdoor shower he rigged behind the boathouse took half the load. MEALS, for fourteen - Breakfast: everyone gets their own. Oatmeal in the big pot, bread, eggs to order. - Lunch: sandwiches, on the porch, made in a line. - Supper by family: Saturday and the Fourth, ours (walleye on the Fourth, 28 fillets). Sunday, Ellen and Mark: tacos. Tuesday, David and Julia: spaghetti and Julia's salad. Wednesday, Kate and Samir: grilled chicken with Leila's rice. Thursday: the Thirsty Loon for fish, all fourteen; telephone Patti by 4. Friday: everything left. - The flag cake: a double recipe now, in the big sheet pan. Marianne Trost was born on the Fourth and gets a candle in it. THEO'S NUTS: the nut tin went home in June. No walnuts, pecans or almonds on the property. GROCERIES: three trips to Northgate Foods. 9 gallons of milk, 7 loaves from Sigrid plus four bought, 11 dozen eggs, 20 lb of potatoes. WHAT WORKED - The pontoon, twice a day. - A chore chart by family, not by person. - Quiet hour, 1 to 2, everyone on a bed or a dock with a book. WHAT DID NOT - One bathroom. - The children's cots on the porch in Tuesday's thunderstorm; they came in, all four, and slept on the main room floor. - Ray on his feet. FOR NEXT YEAR: the shed. Ray and David paced it off: 12 x 16. It would hold four bunks. Ask Nate what it would take.
