What it says

OPENING THE CABIN. Per Ray, dictated up north on opening weekend, me typing. BEFORE WE COME 1. Call Earl two weeks ahead with the date. He turns the water on the Wednesday or Thursday before and walks through. 2. Call Rod at Pike Bay about the boats. They come back Memorial Day weekend, not at opening. 3. Call Kivela if the propane gauge read under 30 per cent at closing. FIRST HOUR 4. Walk round the outside before going in. Roof, chimney cap, trees down, the wires from the pole, the septic lids, the mound. 5. Power: main breaker is left ON all winter. Check the panel in the hall closet for anything tripped. 6. Water, if Earl has not already: close every tap and the drain valve in the pump house. Well pump breaker ON (it is labelled). Let the pressure tank fill. Gauge should climb to 60 and the pump shut off. If it does not shut off, turn it off and find out why. 7. Open each tap slowly, one at a time, the farthest first. Air, then rust, then water. Let each run clear. 8. Look at every joint under the sinks, at the toilet, at the water heater and in the pump house, with a flashlight. 9. Water heater: fill it FIRST. A tap on hot running full with no air. Then, and only then, light it. A heater lit empty is ruined. 10. Furnace: switch on, thermostat up, listen. New filter. 11. Refrigerator: plug in. It takes four hours to get cold. 12. Dishwasher: run it empty once. FIRST DAY 13. Flush the antifreeze out of every trap by running each tap for a minute. 14. Mouse stations: check all six. 15. Smoke detectors and the carbon monoxide one: new batteries every opening. 16. Generator (the Honda): fresh gas, check the oil, run it 20 minutes under a load. 17. Chimney: look up it with the flashlight before the first fire. Birds. 18. Porch: sheets off the furniture. Check the screens for holes. Oil the door closer. BY MEMORIAL DAY 19. Dock in (Earl and Travis). Level it. Bench on, ladder down, weather mast back on its post, lights on. 20. Boats from Pike Bay. Batteries in. Check the trailer lights before the road. This year: opened May 7. Ice went out May 3.
