What it says
Gulf Shores, the second week, and a bad one. Gerard Lachance, in the unit beside ours, died on Wednesday night. We heard Ruthie through the wall, and then the ambulance, and R. went out into the corridor in his robe and stood with her until her son could be reached. On Tuesday Gerard had shown R. a photograph of a redfish.
The cards were not played on Thursday. Jeanette made a casserole instead, and six of us sat in Ruthie's unit and ate it off our laps.
I walked a long way down the beach on Friday by myself. Sanderlings, willets, one oystercatcher.
