What it says

We bought a painting yesterday. Three pears on a blue cloth, in oil, by a woman named Miriam Kessel Dahl. It was in the window at Windrow Gallery, and R. stopped in front of it on the way back from the farmers' market. We went in. He asked the price, and when she told him he did not blink; he looked at me, and I heard myself say yes. He says he likes that the pears are not perfect; one of them has a bruise. It is over the sideboard in the kitchen, where he can see it from his chair.
