What it says
R. retired today. Thirty-eight years, one employer. They gave him a lunch at the Nordic Table, forty people, and a Hamilton wristwatch with his initials and the years engraved on the back. The senior partner said that no bridge R. designed has ever been closed for anything but paint. R. stood up, said thank you, said the coffee had never improved in all that time, and sat down.
Jim Hrdlicka drove him home, on account of the champagne, and carried in the box from his desk: the slide rule, the hard hat, a length of rebar mounted on a walnut base, and thirty-eight years of field books, which are on the dining room table.
