What it says

Christmas here, everyone but Kate, who was with Samir's people in Michigan and comes at New Year's. I made the gravy Mom's way. R. gave me a photograph, framed. Walt found it among the farm pictures: Mom at about thirty on the porch steps with a dishpan of peas in her lap, squinting at whoever held the camera. I had never seen it. I had to go and stand in the pantry for a minute. I have been reading "Being Mortal" in the evenings, aloud in part, until R. asked me to stop. He said it was a good book and he would like to hear the rest in the spring. Kate telephoned on Christmas Eve, from Michigan, with Samir beside her. It will be June, in Portland. R. said, "Good," and passed me the telephone.
