What it says
Our back step, in Madison, but Mom was sitting on it, the Mom from the photograph, about thirty, with the dishpan of peas in her lap. She was shelling them and dropping the pods on the grass. I asked what she was doing there. She tipped her head at the kitchen door and said, "He's inside. He's fine. He's looking for his glasses." I went in and the kitchen was the farm kitchen.
