Question

Who was at the table for Hannah's birthday dinner?
A good answer

Five can be named and the journal counts six. The entry of October 4, 2026, written before the dinner, has Hannah coming at five and Ellen and Mark driving up, "so it will be six at the table"; with Peg and Ray that makes five. The sixth is not named in the journal or in her note of the same day. A good answer gives the five, says a sixth was expected and is not named, and does not supply one (her brother, her roommate) as if it were written down. It also says the entry was written beforehand, so who actually came is not recorded.

A cold clear morning, 38 at seven, the first frost on the garage roof. Church; R. ushered, though it is not his Sunday, because one of the first-Sunday men has a cold.

We go up north on the 16th to close. I have telephoned Earl and Pike Bay. R. has agreed to look for his passport before we leave and not after; it has to be renewed before Norway, and he has known that since January.

Hannah comes at five. Ellen and Mark are driving up for the birthday, so it will be six at the table and one pie will not do.

Hannah is eighteen today. Her card went on Monday. We telephoned after supper, and she answered from a corridor with a great deal of noise behind her; her floor had made her a cake out of something. The proper dinner is Sunday, when her parents can come.

Eighteen years ago this morning I was in the library at Tamarack Hill, shelving the new picture books, when Bunny came to the door herself instead of buzzing. Ellen had gone in at five. I taught until 11:30, because there was nobody to take the kindergarten, and then R. came for me in the old truck and we drove to Naperville with the windows down. She was four hours old when I held her. That was before I kept anything in here, so I am putting it down now.

R. has his slide rule out on the desk in the den. He means to give it to her on Sunday. I said she will not know what it is. He said, "She will in five minutes."

Before we close the cabin (we go up Friday the 16th; close the 17th and 18th).

DONE
- Earl: telephoned. He blows the lines Monday the 19th. His winter bill is $810.00 this year, up $30, due November 15.
- Generator serviced.
- Chimney swept in September.

TO DO THIS WEEK
1. The dishwasher: its year of warranty is nearly up, and the wheel on the lower rack has been sticking since August. Telephone about it NOW.
2. Ray's passport. Find it; photograph at the pharmacy; form and cheque in the post. It expires in about two months and Norway cannot be booked without it.
3. The truck: the registration is due this month, and its insurance soon after. Ask Linda about combining it with the RAV4's.
4. Mammogram, and Ray's cardiology on the 13th.
5. Tom Kittleson, the October review. Ask about the last IRA withdrawal in December.
6. Reorder Birdie's chewables.
7. Rod at Pike Bay: telephone him. Both boats to the landing on the 16th. Storage is $640.00, to be paid when they are dropped.

TO TAKE NORTH
- Ray's closing note, printed. My additions for the bunkhouse and the handrail.
- Two gallons of the pink antifreeze. Mouse bait for the six stations.
- The tubs for the quilts: the log cabin, the loons and both bunk quilts come home or go into their tubs.
- The four Portuguese tiles, to go up behind the cabin's range. Ray has the adhesive.

Applesauce this afternoon: half a bushel of Cortlands and a peck of McIntosh from the Verona road. Hannah comes at 5, with Ellen and Mark, for her birthday. Two pies.
Traps it covers

only_in_note Only in the journal: what Ray asked the cardiologist, the night nurse's name, where the sourdough starter came from and its name, who named the dog, her mother's and Lorraine's last words, where she was when three of the grandchildren were born, Don's funeral, and the morning of Arnie's stroke.

note_contradicts_record Two notes give different quantities of apples for the same batch of sauce, and nothing in the account settles which is right.
