We have a dog. Her name is Birdie. She is a yellow Labrador, nine weeks old, fourteen pounds, and she is asleep in a laundry basket beside my chair with one ear inside out.

R. said in November that we were not getting another dog, and said it again at Christmas and at Easter. Then on a Tuesday in April he came in from the shop and said that a man in his woodworking guild knew of a litter coming, at a breeder's near Lodi, and that it would do no harm to look. We looked on May 18. This one walked across the pen and sat down on his boot.

The name is Lucas's. We put it to the grandchildren on the telephone, and Lucas, who is five, said she should be Birdie, "because Grandma is always looking at birds and now she can look at the dog." Hannah wanted Clementine. Owen wanted Gus Two and was overruled by everyone, R. first.

R. has been down on the kitchen floor most of the afternoon. She cried for twenty minutes in the car and has not cried since.
