What it says

Mom's in Whitlow again. Heart failure. She couldn't lie flat Monday night and by Tuesday morning she was breathing like she'd run up a hill. Nine pounds of water in a week and I didn't see it. I saw her ankles. I thought, her ankles are swollen, I should mention that. The doctor asked what she eats. I told her about my Sunday cooking, the low-salt chicken, how I label it. I was proud of it. Then she asked what else is in the pantry. Canned green beans. Saltines. Soup. I'd been cooking her supper and never once looked at what she has for lunch. They've pulled eleven pounds off her with the IV. She looks better than she has since fall. I've got a bid due Friday that's about half done.
