What it says

saw the duplex on Finchley this morning with Dez. upper floor of an old house, two bedrooms and a sunroom. the sunroom. I walked into it and knew. windows on two sides, a floor that slopes a little to the south, room for the flat file and the drafting table and still a place to stand back and look at a thing. I've worked in the corner of a living room for six years. I measured the wall while the landlord was still talking and Dez, behind me, laughed. and then I came home, and it was four o'clock, and the light was coming into the bay the way it does in september, low and orange, right across the desk onto the persimmons, and Miso was in it, and I sat down on the floor. I signed this lease again in march because of that window. I said it was worth fifty-five dollars. I said so was Gerald. but in march I was choosing between this and worse. now it's this or a room built for the work, with my best friend on the other side of a wall, cooking. there's a cost to leaving early and I have to talk to Gail. I haven't looked. I think I'm not looking because once I know the number it's a real decision. Dez, in the car: "you measured the wall. you're in."

the sunroom. but in march I was choosing between this and worse. now it's this or a room built for the work, with my best friend on the other side of a wall, cooking.

there's a cost to leaving early and I have to talk to Gail. I haven't looked. I think I'm not looking because once I know the number it's a real decision.
