What it says

a lake, iced over, grey. a man is standing on the shore with his back to me in a red jacket, hands behind him. I walk down and it's a heron in the jacket, the sleeves empty, the plumes coming out of the collar. it's holding a pencil in its bill. I look down at the ice and there are dates written on it, a column of them, going out toward the middle where I can't read. the last one is today.
