What it says

Cabin septic: finished yesterday, August 26. Kangas Excavating & Septic, four days of digging and one of tidying. Why: the steel tank from 1958 failed the county inspection in June. What: a new 1,000-gallon tank, a pump chamber, and a mound, because the soil is too wet near the lake for an ordinary field. County permit and final inspection included. $14,200.00. Where it is: the tank and pump chamber are beside the drive, twelve paces from the corner of the cabin toward the road; two green lids. The mound is the long low hill in the side yard, seeded and strawed. Rules, per Mr. Kangas: 1. Nothing drives on the mound. Not the truck, not the mower when it is wet, not Earl's plow. 2. No trees or shrubs on it. Grass only. 3. There is an alarm on a post by the pump chamber: a RED LIGHT and a buzzer. If it comes on, the pump has stopped. Use no more water than can be helped and telephone Kangas. 4. Nothing down the drains but what belongs there. He gave me a list, which I have taped inside the bathroom vanity for guests. 5. Have the tank pumped every three years.

Why it exists

only_in_note Facts that are still only in one everyday note after the second pass: the Gustafsons' gate code, the shed padlock, where the Christmas ornaments are, the dog's food and amount, Ray's sizes, the ice-out log from 2004, the main water shutoff, the septic alarm light, Hannah's dorm room, the way to the cabin, the lefse proportions, each lot's share of the plowing, and the size of the lake bedroom's screen. These were not scrubbed from other records on purpose; they are simply things written down once.
