What it says
NORWAY WITH JUDY, September 6 to 20, 2022: the log.
Sept. 6-7. O'Hare to Amsterdam to Bergen, and then the small plane to Sogndal the same afternoon, 35 minutes. Astrid Fardal and her husband Knut met us with a sign that said HAUGEN.
Sept. 7-10, Sogndal, four nights with Astrid and Knut in the house above the fjord. The connection, as Astrid has it from the parish book and I have now copied: her great-grandmother Brita and our grandmother Ingeborg were sisters, daughters of Ola. So her mother, Solveig, who is 91, and I are second cousins, and Astrid is a second cousin once removed. Solveig knew the name of every person in the one photograph Judy brought.
- Thursday the 8th: up to the farm with Knut. I wore the sølje. Per Solveig it was bought in Bergen and sent to Wisconsin in 1921.
- Friday the 9th: the stave church, by ferry across the fjord.
- Saturday: the churchyard at Stedje again, the parish office (closed; it was open mornings in 2012 and still is, but not Saturdays), a walk along the water.
Christmas cards from now on.
Sept. 11-12, Balestrand, two nights, by the express boat. The old wooden hotel. Judy painted in the garden and I read.
Sept. 13. Boat to Flåm, the railway up to Myrdal, the train on to Oslo.
Sept. 13-15, Oslo, three nights. The new Munch museum, which Judy wanted, eleven floors of it. The new library by the opera house, which I wanted: five floors, open stacks, a children's room with a slide in it.
Sept. 16. The train back over the mountains to Bergen, seven hours, snow already at the top.
Sept. 16-19, Bergen, four nights, and not one drop of rain. The funicular; the fish market; a boat out among the islands on the 18th.
Sept. 20. Home, through Amsterdam.
Birds: four new. Crested tit and a black woodpecker in the pines above Sogndal with Knut; a common crane in a field from the train; a red-throated diver on the fjord at Balestrand. And a white-tailed eagle from the Bergen boat, not new. Life list 283.
Money: a cup of coffee and a bun, 98 kroner. We split everything down the middle and settled up on the plane in a notebook.
