What it says
Christmas here, all fourteen, in this house, for three days, and nobody quarreled about anything larger than the last of the kringle.
Hannah is seventeen and has applied to Madison, for nursing, and will hear next month. She would be twelve minutes from this kitchen. I have said nothing to her about that. I said it to R., who said, "She'll come for the laundry."
Maeve, nine, has read every one of the books I have sent her, four years of them, and keeps them in the order they came. June, four, sat in my lap through the whole Christmas Eve service and asked in a carrying whisper, during the silence, whether the baby was a real baby or a pretend one. Pastor Kristin heard, and used it on Christmas morning.
I read "Raising Hare" the day after, in the back bedroom with the door shut.
