What it says

She did not wake today. Her sister Vivian has come from Janesville and sleeps on the sofa. The nurse was there when I arrived, and took me into the kitchen and said, kindly and without softening it, that it will be this week. I read the chapter anyway. It was the one where they go out on the river before dawn to look for the lost child, and find him. I had forgotten that it was in there. I got through it. Hal walked me to the car and held on to the door after I was in it and said, "Thirty-seven years, the two of you." I said, "Forty-six, the two of you." He nodded and let go of the door.
