What it says

At the cabin, in February, for the first time in the fifteen years we have owned it. Bev and Arnie talked us into it at Christmas: the lake association has a potluck on the ice tonight, Earl plowed us out on Thursday, and R. has wanted to try for walleye through the ice ever since Arnie began bragging about it. He is out there with Arnie now, two dots and a sled. We came up yesterday. The lake is a white field with snowmobile tracks ruled across it. Four below at seven this morning. No water; we brought it in jugs and are using Bev's bathroom. The furnace and the fireplace between them have the main room at 61. The woodbox is half empty already. Birds at the feeder I hung an hour ago: chickadees within ten minutes; a red-breasted nuthatch; and a pine grosbeak, which I have never had here, eating the sumac by the pump house. Tracks across the yard that R. says are fox.
