What it says
Christmas here, with Ellen's four and David's four: ten in the house. Kate is eight months along in Portland and not allowed on an airplane; she joined us on the laptop at the end of the table. Maeve is twenty-one months old and calls me "Gamma Pig."
R. and I have, for once, read the same book: "The Death and Life of the Great Lakes." He read it for the engineering and I for the story, and we have talked about lampreys at supper more than is usual.
I also got through "Lincoln in the Bardo." I thought about Mom the whole way through, and admired it more than I liked it.
