What it says
Kate was married yesterday, in a garden in Portland, under a pergola that Samir designed and built himself the week before. She kept her name and walked in alone, having informed her father in March that she was not property to be handed over. R. walked her as far as the gate, by negotiation.
I wore Mom's pearls, restrung in April for the purpose, with new earrings to go with them. Kate fastened the clasp for me in the hotel room, and neither of us said anything.
There was a great deal of food, from both directions: lamb, grape leaves, and a kransekake that I carried on the plane in my lap in three boxes and assembled on the spot with royal icing and a prayer.
Hannah, six, and Owen, four, were in charge of bubbles. Lucas, not quite two, was in charge of nothing and ran the whole time.
It did not rain.
