What it says

First entry. I have been putting the household into this program since New Year's, on account of the furnace. It quit on December 29, the man from Fitch & Rowe asked whether it was under warranty, and neither of us could produce the paper. (I found it on January 3 in the cookbook cupboard. It ran out in 2001, except for the heat exchanger, which has four months left and was not the part that broke.) So everything goes in here now, with a date and a source. One of the sections is called Journal. I have told eight-year-olds for twenty-five years that keeping a diary is good for them and have never kept one myself. Today: 11 degrees at seven. Three chickadees and the male cardinal at the feeder. Gus asleep on the heat register. R. is in the den with the Packers, who are in Philadelphia and, from the sound of it, ahead.
