What it says
Inventory. I was counting the shelves with the hand counter, and every book on every shelf was the same book, a green one, with no title. I got to eleven thousand and knew that I had to finish before the bell.
The children came in, but they were the children from 1987 and they were grown, men in work boots and a woman with a baby, and they sat down on the small chairs with their knees up and waited to be read to. I did not have anything but the green book.
