What it says
Mom fell in the kitchen night before last and broke her hip. She was on the floor I don't know how long. She pulled the wall phone down by the cord and called 911 and then called me at 2:40 and said, "I've done something silly."
Surgery was this afternoon. Dr. Voss says it went fine. She's 77 with a bad heart and diabetes and it went fine.
I sat in the same waiting room where I sat for her knee, and that time Dad was beside me working the crossword in pen. I kept turning to say something to him.
She was alone in that house. That's the part. I knew she shouldn't be and I let it ride because she said she was fine and it was easier to believe her. Dad told me not to believe her. He told me in September.
