What it says

rookery w/ Marit, 6:30am. to get right: - they stand w/ the neck pulled in when cold, a grey loaf on stilts. stretched up only when alert - the plumes: long ones on the chest and back in breeding season, and the two black ones off the back of the head - legs are darker and thicker than I draw them. knees (ankles) bend BACKWARD - eye is yellow, small, set forward. bill is dagger, yellowish, darker on top - in flight: neck folded in an S, legs trailing straight, wingbeats slow, "like a man shaking out a rug" (Marit) - 4 ft tall, 6 ft wingspan, 5 pounds. FIVE POUNDS - they come back when there's open water at the edges, before full ice-out. so in the book he can arrive when the ice is still on. Liesl's notebook agrees: "heron" appears 3-9 days before "ice out" most years - they're alone when fishing, together when nesting - ice-out here is usually mid-april. this year the marsh opened 4/6
