What it says

seventeen below this morning. the inside of the bedroom window had frost on it in the shape of ferns, which I drew before I did anything else, which is why I was late finding out the car was dead. Gerald came out in his robe and boots with jumper cables over his shoulder like a man going to deal with a snake. he's seventy-four. he would not let me hold the cables. "red to dead," he said, and then told me about a 1971 Dodge for the whole five minutes the car was charging. it started. I drove to nowhere for half an hour to charge it, just the river road and back, heater on full doing nothing. the river is frozen bank to bank and smoking. the shop was dead too. two customers. Ines had me re-tape the whole rental fleet's handlebars.
